How McCurleys Made Synthia LaFontaine

Distinctive Origins?

Thanks to Michael McCurley & Cinda Lewis for sharing  research describing the role of the McKerlie/Kerlie families - presumably the ancestors  of the Kerlies shown here as originators of the McCurley line - in the cause of Sir William Wallace and Stephen of Ireland, as proprietors of Cruggleton Castle @ late 1200s - early 1300s, & research connecting several McCurley American pioneer lines as Scottish Royal descendants, directly from King Robert Bruce I (1274-1329)  https://www.mccurleymuseum.com/mccurley-museum/historic-origins/historic-locations

Anne Berneice McCurley was born on McCurley Prairie in Texas in April 20, 1928, and died in Burleson, Texas in May 10, 1993. Anne was Synthia's mother

Birth/childhood: Anne was born April 20, 1928 on McCurley Prairie in Denton County, Texas, USA. Anne was the 11th known child born to her mother, Maud Ann Crites McCurley, and the 10th known child born to her father, Andrew Jackson "Jack" McCurley.  Maud was 40 or 43 years old (records vary) when Anne was born and Jack was 53 years old. One child born to Anne's parents before Anne, Lucy Laverne (1925-1925) died in infancy. Jack and Maud had four more babies after Anne, but three of them also died in infancy. Anne spoke of life on McCurley Prairie as extremely harsh. She reported working in the fields plowing, planting, weeding, picking fruits and vegetables, and sowing/tilling the fields, with her parents and siblings, for many hours every day in oppressive Texas heat with little to no relief. The difficulties Anne reported from her youth were mostly about living conditions that were a part of being in a 3rd generation pioneer farming family in Texas in the 1930s and 40s: unrelenting heat, scarcity of resources, hunger, lack of comfortable accomodations, etc. She reported, for example, that all the children slept in one room on the floor for most of her life.

Adult life: Anne told of leaving home when she was a young woman to go live with her older sister, Helen (born in 1921), and work, in Dallas, Texas, which was somewhat near to McCurley Prairie.  Anne had a very difficult early life, along with her siblings. However, she also had a remarkably troubled, difficult, and ultimately tragic adult life compared to her siblings, all of whom achieved and maintained wealth and stability throughout their lives. Anne had 21 nieces and nephews from her full siblings and they all enjoyed the advantages of generational wealth in their childhood and adult lives. Seventeen of her nieces and nephews  became well educated, successful adults with families that enjoyed generational prosperity. One nephew died young while saving others in a school fire. One nephew and one niece died young of disease. One nephew had severe emotional/substrance abuse issues throughout his long, yet prosperous, life.

Children: Anne gave birth to a child, Cheryl "Darlene," in 1948, and gave her up for adoption. Darlene was unknown to the family until Darlene sought out Anne to reunite shortly before Anne's death. Anne and Eugene "Gene" LaFontaine had two daughters together, Lanette Verne, December 29, 1953, and Synthia Delina, February 12, 1957.  Anne and Gene marrried in 1955. There is no record of their divorce, but Gene had remarried by September of 1957, the year Synthia was born. Anne had been married twice before and was married at least three times afterward. Gene was married twice before marrying Anne and at least three times afterward. Ultimately, Anne had a total of three children and Gene had at least nine.

Death: Anne first reported feeling ill in January of 1993. She died May 10, 1993, of advanced lung cancer, at her daughter's home in Burleson, Texas, with her three daughters at her side.
